The Studios

Located at 716 Monroe St NE in the heart of the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, DC. Each studio has unique hours, but many are open Saturdays from 10am-4pm. ixöq (ee-sh-auk) is a women owned & operated social enterprise that sells unique, colorful & functional handmade totes, planters and decorative storage containers, designed locally by founder katie leary sebastian & hand woven by artisans in Guatemala, using recycled plastic cord. The mission of ixöq, which means woman in the Mayan dialects Kaqchikel and Tzutujil, is to honor the traditions of and provide support to women artisans through a partnership focused on the design, production, and sale of practical & fun ethically made goods. Since 2014, Black Lab has been the creative laboratory and emporium of word and digital artist, Leda Black (Creatrix). Here the visitor will find art about transformative women and divine females in many mediums, including digital original prints, garments, sculpture, and gifts. Really, the message is the medium. These works are iterations gesturing toward the question that Mary Beard asks in Women & Power, A Manifesto, “If women aren’t perceived to be within the structure of power, isn’t it power itself we need to redefine?"

Sue Wrbican is an interdisciplinary artist who works in photography, installation, sculpture and video. Large sculptural works can be seen at the Tephra Institute of Contemporary Art in Reston, Virginia and the Seligmann Center in Sugarloaf, New York. Her work is in various collections such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, CA.
